Ethanol and drivers for Finnish Formula Fords

E-mail Print PDF

Recent rumors indicate that the Finnish Formula Ford association is doing a good job negotiating the ethanol supply for the series Championships 2009. At the same time new drivers have been listed on the Finnish Formula Ford website. Seems things are moving ahead for this season's racing!

One of the key issues for how the Finnish Formula Ford Championships 2009 will shape up is whether the series can secure adequate ethanol supply for all teams in order to run under the "cleanest racing series" flag. Ethanol powered Formula Fords have attracted both attention and support, and recently leading Finnish motorsports magazine Vauhdin Maailma featured results from benchtests using a Duratec engine with ethanol. The results were similar as those achieved using the Zetec - the conversion is feasible and actually provides some extra power too.

The Board members of the Finnish Formula Ford association are now in discussions with an ethanol supplier, and the current situation looks very promising. Already earlier the association has received support from the Henry Ford Foundation, which provided funding for new Motec engine control units and some other parts needed to convert the Zetec engines for ethanol. As a result, the Finnish Formula Ford association can provide the required parts free of charge for drivers entering the Finnish Championships in 2009.

While there is progress on the ethanol front, two additional drivers racing in the class- Ville Kivinen and Janne Knuutinen - have been listed on the Formula Ford Finland website. Both Ville and Janne raced in the class last year. That brings the total number up to 7 now, and there are still a few days left for the February deadline of lower fee enrollment. The final deadline for entering the series is  end of March, so there is still time for entries.

These news are highly welcome, and bring added confidence that we will have another interesting racing season in the Formula Ford class in 2009!
