s2i Motorsport has enrolled into the 2009 Finnish Championships for Formula Fords. The class is familiar from the past, since the team restored a Formula Ford Zetec some years back. However, this is the first time we enter this class competitively, and also the first time our team plans to race the full Finnish Championship series.
As for the car, we are still in progress of finding a suitable solution. Both Duratec and Zetec options are considered, and discussions have been held with various parties. The choice is not easy, since the class is likely to undergo some changes in the coming years and we need to plan for the future too...
The team's driver will be Per Stenius, 41, who most likely will be the oldest driver in this series dominated by young guns coming from go-karting.
"This will be interesting", Per says, "My goal is purely to see how things go and learn as much as possible. This season is the first, and I hope there will be more to follow. It would be nice to establish the Formula Ford series as a racing class where all ages can participate. In UK the Formula Ford races are extremely competitive and great entertainment - we should strive for the same here."
"The Formula Ford class makes great sense in Finland", he continues. "It is an entry class, it is quite economical, and it is fairly easy to enter the class and find competitive cars to race with. The cost of racing is a big factor if we truly want the Finnish Championship class to grow. There is simply not enough money around to make high cost racing realistic. The success of the Mini1000 and Legends classes shows that good racing requires that a lot of drivers can enter. I hope we can make Formula Ford more popular for drivers across all ages, and make sure we see 20+ cars in every race going forward."
